Terence Corcoran: Closing the door on Kyoto
On the eve of the Dustbin in Durban, an apt nickname for the doomed UN Framework climate talks that opened Monday in South Africa, it looks like the Kyoto Protocol will not go gently into the night, at least not for Canada.
I have always been involved with environmental issues throughout my life, and when countries band together to sign accords to lessen their emissions and carbon footprint, and eventually help reduce global pollution, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling from within. However, the opposite is also true, and when I find out my own country Canada, has done nothing but renege on its promises and are the great polluters that rather than decreasing carbon emissions have steadily been increasing them, I feel a loss of pride.
For next week’s 519 news segment I propose to take a deeper look at why we have not collectively invested in greener technlogies, despite so many promises by politicians. To top it off, an opportunity of a life time to become global role models in both behavior and a chance to show how we mean what we say was thwarted by corporate and political shortcomings.
Since I feel quite passionate about this topic, I wonder if I will be able to show both sides of the story effectively and in a fair manner. Perhaps with ample time such a thing can be done, but for now the news has to come out that we as a country have not lived up to our potential.
